ECONOMYNEXT – Health authorities confirmed 49 new COVID-19 cases at Sri Lanka’s largest fish market in Peliyagoda today.
The market is temporarily closed following the discovery, Sri Lanka’s national COVID-19 task force said.
It’s not clear how the fish vendors contracted the virus. The COVID-19 task force is probing the matter, officials said.
The Peliyagoda fish market is a mini hub where a large number of wholesalers and vendors trade. An outbreak in the market could result in a wider spread.
The COVID-19 situation report of the National Operations Centre for the Prevention of COVID-19 (NOCPOC), the country has had a total of 5,810 cases out of which 2,341 are active cases who are receiving treatments.
The Minuwangoda cluster alone has 2,344 patients, of which 1,041 are staff of the Brandix apparel manufacturing company and the rest of the 1,3030 cases are close contacts of the cluster.
Only 50 cases are reported from foreign returnees. (Colombo/Oct21/2020)
