The Minister of Education, Prof. GL Peiris, said that identifying the development needs and current challenges at the district level would be very effective in uplifting the education system in the country and the proposals made by the Ministry of Education in this regard will be given priority in the 2021 Budget, which is to be presented in November.
The Minister expressed these views while participating in the Polonnaruwa District section of program to examine the current situation in the field of education in the country at the district level.
The Minister pointed out that in looking into the problems that have arisen in the field of education, while some issues can be easily and quickly resolved, financial provisions need to be made for certain problems, and certain situations will take considerable time to be resolved.
He said that proposals will be made in the forthcoming budget regarding many issues including the shortage of teachers in schools, problems in the teacher transfer process and inadequate physical facilities.
The Minister noted that human resources are the main resource we have in the development process and the field of education has a huge role to play in ensuring that human resources contribute to the development process properly.
The Minister also said that in the future, work will be done in close coordination with the State Ministries allocated for education to formulate a planned program for the quality development of education.
The Minister of Education and other officials also inspected the proposed location of the new University of Manampitiya, Polonnaruwa, the location of the proposed new National School in the Gallella area, and the current status of the Minneriya National School which has a distinguished history.
State Minister of Education Piyal Nishantha de Silva, State Minister of Land Management, Public Enterprises, Land and Property Development Roshan Ranasinghe, many senior officials of the Ministry of Education, including Provincial and Zonal Directors of Education, were also present.
