‘Postpone debate on 20A; Convening of Parliament unlawful’ Kiriella writes to President

Chief Opposition Whip Laxman Kiriella in a letter addressed to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has requested of him to draw the required steps to postpone the debate on the proposed 20th Amendment to the Constitution.

Kiriella in his letter attributes the second COVID19 outbreak in Sri Lanka, to the inefficiency of the government while adding that despite repeated re-assurances the government had failed to curtail the spread of the virus.

Kiriella also notes that in accordance with the COVID19 prevention regulations which were recently gazetted, the current seating arrangements of MP in Parliament is a violation of the very gazette published by the state.

He also notes that convening Parliament against a backdrop in which meetings have been limited constitutes a breach of the exigent laws passed into law through the gazette.

The Chief Opposition Whip also states that if Parliament was to convene at this juncture in violation of the quarantine laws, setting such precedent would come at a heavy cost.
